The Alumnae Association is a grass-roots organization of inspiring and dynamic individuals. From its beginning, young and enthusiastic alumnae sought a way to stay connected to the College, expressing keen interest in the curriculum and working to raise money for scholarships. They held their first meeting in 1890, and the Association was chartered and incorporated in 1897, "to further the interests and the general welfare" of the College and "to cultivate intimate relations and friendly feelings" among its alumnae.
Our motto, "Lift the Lantern High," celebrates these values in tandem with our logo, a rainbow of Maypole ribbons in the pattern of interlacing knotwork, a form of ornament symbolizing life that is found in cultures around the world. This represents our support and respect for one another. The lantern in the center of the logo, adapted from the Association's seal established at its founding, represents the search for truth and love of learning.
In the 21st century, The Bryn Mawr College Alumnae Association fosters a strong sense of community and tradition, promotes lifelong learning, enriches the personal, professional and cultural lives of our alumnae/i, and supports service to the College. In fulfilling its mission, the Alumnae Association offers an array of programs and services for alumnae/i.
Anyone who has spent at least one semester as an undergraduate or as agraduate student at Bryn Mawr College, in addition to those receiving degrees or certificates or earning at least four credits in the Division of Special Studies is a member of the Alumnae Association.
