SPRING Academic Courses

Dance Composition II (1.0 credit, Div III)
(ARTD 242) pre-requisite: ARTD 142, Composition I
TTH 2:30pm-4:00pm
Madeline Cantor
The goal of this course is to build on work accomplished in Composition I and to develop an understanding of and skill in the theory and craft of choreography. This includes:
-- deepening movement invention skills
-- exploring form and structure in dancemaking
--investigate sources for sound, principally music, but including text, language, and vocalizations as well
-- developing control of group design
-- broadening critical understanding
Students will work on fewer projects than in Comp I and will thus have more opportunities to revise and expand work.

Students taking DANCE COMP II are also required to take a minimum of one dance technique class per week.

Students wishing to MINOR or MAJOR in Dance or to CHOREOGRAPH for the Spring Concert should consider completing DANCE COMPOSITION II by Spring of their third year. Dance Comp II is a pre-requisite for Advanced Choreography, the course from which choreography for the Spring Concert is selected.

Dance History I: Roots of Western Theatre Dance (from the Greek stage to the dance halls of Paris) (1.0 credit, Div III)
(ARTD 240)
T 6:30-9:00pm
Linda Caruso Haviland

This course investigates the historic and cutlural forces affecting the development and functions of pre-20th century dance as well as its relationship to and impact on the development of Western culture. It will consider nontheatrical forms and applications, but will give special emphasis to the development of theatre dance forms. It will also introduce students to the varied forms of historic documentation of dance and to a view of history not ony as a linerar progression of events but also as process, change and cultural shift. The course includes lecture, discussion, use of audiovisual materials, and a few (easy!) movement experiences. Course requirements include: assigned readings, one short performance critique, one group project, one individual project or paper(4-6 pages), and one open book course exam.

Fall 2008 Academic Courses:

Dance Composition I
(ARTD B 142)
TTH 2:30pm-4:00pm
David Brick

This is a course about making dances. It is open to anyone who likes to create and likes to move. It explores basic elements of dances including space, time, rhythm, energy, dynamics, qualities of movement and gesture, and both traditional and postmodern structures. Compositional theory will be approached through the experience and practice of making dance studies starting with simple solo phrases and moving towards more complex and interactive group forms and processes. While primarily a studio course students will be expected to begin to develop and broaden their understanding of dance as an art form and their abilities to see and critique dances. To this end, students will also be assigned readings.

Students taking DANCE COMP I are also required to take a minimum of one dance technique class per week.

Students wishing to MINOR or MAJOR in Dance or to CHOREOGRAPH for the Spring Concert should consider completing DANCE COMPOSITION I by Spring of their second year. Dance Comp I is required for the major or minor and student choreography for the Spring Concert is selected from work produced in the Advanced Choreography course which has Comp I and II as prerequisites.

APPROACHES TO DANCE: THEMES AND PERSPECTIVES
ARTD B 140
T 6:30-9:15
Linda Caruso Haviland

Dance is art, is play, is ritual, is religion, is courtship, is politics, is bodied, is, in short, a significant and enduring human behavior. This course attempts to introduce students to this multi-layered notion of dance and to demonstrate how other areas of academic inquiry engage with dance to help make sense of it as a human phenomenon. The course also serves as an introduction to the creative, critical, and conceptual processes which emerge in response to the study of dance. Structured in 3-4 week modules, it includes the exploration of sub-fields of dance research such as Dance History, Dance and Philosophy, Dance Criticism, and Dance Ethnology. In addition to lectures and discussion, the course will include video and slide presentations as well as an opportunity to speak with professionals in the field.

NOTE: Students interested in majoring or minoring in Dance should take this course as soon as possible. It is offered every other year and is a requirement.
