MORE INFORMATION ON SPRING TECHNIQUE COURSES
• COURSE LEVELS: Level I classes, Improv, Salsa, Social Dance are open to all levels of experience; levels II (low-int/int)-III(int/adv) technique courses and Dance Ensembles presuppose prior dance training. If a technique course runs the full semester, students should enroll in both halves. You may enroll for a course in the 1st half of the semester BUT to enroll in just the 2nd half of the semester you’ll need the 1st half of that technique or equivalent experience. IF YOU NEED MORE INFO ABOUT CLASS LEVELS OR IF YOU HAVE ANY OTHER QUESTIONS, PLEASE FEEL FREE TO CONTACT PROFESSOR CARUSO HAVILAND In the DANCE OFFICE at 526-5208 or lcarusoh@brynmawr.edu
• Modern, Ballet, Jazz, and African Ensembles are semester long courses. No materials are necessary for the auditions; they are run in a manner similar to class. Students are expected to be working at the intermediate or above level of dance technique.
• Ballet III – Includes a half-hour of pointe work for those who attend the class regularly and who elect to take this portion of the class. Participation is at the discretion of the instructor.
Level II and III classes and Modern, Ballet, Jazz, and African Ensembles s may be taken for PE Credit OR .5 Academic credit. If you are taking a dance course for academic credit you must register during academic registration. See numbers below. Contact the Dance office with any questions.
** Hip-hop ensemble – auditions in January but rehearsals start at the end of February.

Fall 2009 Academic Courses:

FALL 2009 ACADEMIC COURSES:

DANCE COMPOSITION I
(ARTD B 142)
TTH 2:30pm-4:00pm
David Brick
This is a course about making dances. It is open to anyone who likes to create and likes to move. It explores basic elements of dances including space, time, rhythm, energy, dynamics, qualities of movement and gesture, and both traditional and postmodern structures. Compositional theory will be approached through the experience and practice of making dance studies starting with simple solo phrases and moving towards more complex and interactive group forms and processes. While primarily a studio course students will be expected to begin to develop and broaden their understanding of dance as an art form and their abilities to see and critique dances. To this end, students will also be assigned readings.

Students taking DANCE COMP I are also required to take a minimum of one dance technique class per week.

Students wishing to MINOR or MAJOR in Dance or to CHOREOGRAPH for the Spring Concert should take Dance Improv (Spring)in the first year and consider completing DANCE COMPOSITION I in Fall of their second year. Dance Comp I is required for the major or minor and student choreography for the Spring Concert is selected from work produced in the Advanced Choreography course which has Comp I and II as prerequisites.
