HOW TO DETERMINE WHICH FUNDING SOURCES TO APPLY TO
YOU MAY APPLY TO MORE THAN ONE FUNDING SOURCE AND YOU DO NOT NEED TO SUBMIT SEPARATE APPLICATION PACKETS FOR EACH FUNDING SOURCE YOU APPLY TO (See "How to Apply for Internship Funding" below for exceptions)
1) Check below to ensure that you meet the "Minimum Applicant Eligibility Requirements."
2) Check below to ensure that the internship you've been offered or the interships to which you've applied meet the "Minimum Internship Eligibility Requirements."
3) Download the "FUNDING SOURCES SPREADSHEET." Now you must narrow down your eligibility for particular funding sources:
4) Look at the tables of funding sources open to you based on your class status.
5) In these tables, check the "Additional Elligibility?" column to see if you must meet any additional eligibility requirements. Only the "Minimum Applicant Eligibility Requirements" apply if the column contains "No " .
6) Check the "Location Requirements" column to see if your internship (or those for which you've applied) have any geographic and/or type of organization restriction(s). If "No" is listed in the column, there are no location requirements.
7) Lastly, determine if your (applied to) internship meets the "Internship/Research/Project Requirement." These requirements should be interpreted broadly.
MINIMUM APPLICANT ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- During the fall semester following the funded internship, applicant must be enrolled at Bryn Mawr College; or at an accredited Junior Year Abroad program; or a permanent transfer to Haverford, unless a graduating Senior. Failure to meet this requirement will result in forfeit of the total amount of received summer funding.
- Current Haverford College students are eligible for the Ariadne Solter Internship Fund and the Summer Dance Study Fund.
- Must not be employed during the internship.
- Must apply any received funding to an internship detailed in her application materials. If she changes her internship placement, she must receive approval from the contact person for her internship fund. Failure to do so may result in forfeit of any received funding.
- Check either the "Alphabetical List of Funding Sources" below or the "Funding Sources Spreadsheet" for any additional eligibility requirements.
MINIMUM INTERNSHIP ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- Must be 8 to 10 weeks in duration
- Must be a minimum of 30 hours per week
- Must be unpaid to be eligible for full funding ($3,600 in most cases)
- If compensated at less than $3,600, eligible for supplemental funding to bring total to full funding amount. Any compensation must be stated on the "Position Description Form" (form is discussed below in more depth).
- Internship does not need to be with a non-profit organization.
- Internship does not have to be part of a formal internship program.
- Internship does not have to be an established position with an organization; that is, the position may be a self-designed project. However, you must be working in association with, or in partnership with, established organization(s) or with a member of an established organization. A basic account of how the organization or organizational member figures in your project; your expected duties; the goals of the project; and your plans for acheiving these goals must be provided on the "Position Description Form" below.
- Check either the "Alphabetical List of Funding Sources" below or the "Funding Sources Spreadsheet" for any additional eligibility requirements.
STANDARD FUNDING APPLICATION PROCESS
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS ARE COMPLETE AND SUBMITTED CORRECTLY
1) Check the "EXCEPTIONS TO STANDARD PROCEDURES" spreadsheet to see whether you are applying to any funding sources with non-standard: application materials and/or submission location and/or due date. Contact the Center or Department sponsoring a particular funding source for more information.
2) Use the following process (or parts of the process) to apply to standard funding sources:
3) Complete: the "Application Coversheet" form; up to three "Position and Sponsoring Organization" form(s); an "Additional Positions" form (if you've applied to more than 3 positions; write a two-page, single-spaced Personal Statement; assemble a 1 to 2 page Resume; provide the "Letter of Recommendation" form to your Recommender either via email or hardcopy. Please do not use special paper for your Personal Statement and Resume. You may provide a double-sided copy.
4) Clip your materials together. Please do not use special folders or covers--a staple or paperclip will do.
5) Submit a single copy of your application materials to the Dean's Office on or before March 6.
6) Follow up with your Recommender in a few days to make sure (s)he has submitted your Letter. If the letter comes in a few days late, that's fine. Please do not contact the Dean's Office about whether the Letter has been received.5)
7) For any funding sources with non-standard procedure(s), use the "Exceptions to Standard Procedures" as a guide to any non-standard required application materials, sources of application materials, submission location, and due date.
8) The "Application Coversheet" also contains information on where and when to submit your application materials. Make sure to submit a copy of the "Application Coversheet" to the Dean's Office (if you aren't applying to any standard procedure funding sources).
STANDARD REQUIRED APPLICATION MATERIALS
YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR ENSURING THAT YOUR APPLICATION MATERIALS ARE COMPLETE AND SUBMITTED CORRECTLY
1) Application Coversheet: Funding Sources for Which Applying Form
Select the funding source(s) to which you are applying using this form.
The form also provides specific information about required application materials, application submission procedures, application due dates, and materials (including requirements for application to multiple funding sources).
If you submitted applications to funding sources with early due dates, please submit an updated Application Coversheet when applying to funding sources with later due dates.
2) Position and Sponsoring Organization Description Form
Submit a separate Position and Sponsoring Organization form for each of three positions ONLY.
You may list up to eight additional positions for which you've applied, using the Additional Positions Form.
You MUST notify the Dean's Office immediately by email if you are selected for a position OR if you are not selected for any position submitted with your application. You may not submit additional positions after application submission.
WHY WE REQUIRE POSITION & ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTIONS
The Description Form allows us to assess whether you and the position(s) for which you've applied meet standard eligibility requirements and any additional funding source eligibility requirements of the funds to which you have applied.
The Description Form also allows us to assess the quality of the position in order to determine whether it would further your goals as explicated in your Personal Statement.
The Description Form therefore has implications for how you should write your Personal Statement; the purpose of the Personal Statement is not to provide a description of the position(s) to which you have applied or to demonstrate that eligibility requirements are met.
3) Personal Statement (singled-spaced, two pages maximum)
As noted above, the purpose of the Personal Statement is not to provide a description of the position(s) to which you are applying or to demonstrate that eligibility requirements are met.
The Personal Statement should provide an argument that you would benefit from the position. In order to do this, you should aim to establish:
4) Resume (two pages maximum)
5) One Letter of Recommendation Form
Must be completed by either a Tri-co Faculty member, Staff member or Dean. Recommenders may submit letters to the Dean's Office via email (deansoffice@brynmawr.edu) or hardcopy (Taylor, 2nd Floor). For advice on how to request a letter of recommendation see How to Ask.
You are responsible for following up with your recommender to make sure she or he has submitted the Letter of Recommendation Form.
STANDARD SUBMISSION PROCEDURES
- MOST applications are due March 6.
- MOST applications are due to the Dean's Office.
- However, some funding sources may have a different due date and/or require submission to a different office.
GENERAL INFORMATION ABOUT FUNDING NOTIFICATION
- Funding decisions made through the Dean's Office will be communicated either via email or letter by April 17.
- Departments and Centers may have different notification dates. These will be posted upon communication to Dean's Office.
- Letter confirming

SUMMER SCIENCE RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS |

Eligibility: current Sophomores, Juniors |
|
Description: In summer 2009, the College will provide 35-45 undergraduate science research stipends. Undergraduate research initiatives are central to the College's approach to science education. All science majors are encouraged to conduct mentored research projects during the summer and/or academic year, and each year over 50% of all science majors do so. Since 1989, each summer the College has provided 35-45 students with ten-week research stipends to conduct independent research under the guidance of Bryn Mawr faculty members in the sciences and mathematics. The summer program is enriched by professional development workshops and a poster session at which students present their research to the college community. Please note that these stipends are restricted to Bryn Mawr students and Haverford students majoring in the sciences at Bryn Mawr, who are doing discovery-based research in the laboratory or field with Bryn Mawr faculty. They are not open to Swarthmore students or Bryn Mawr/Haverford students working at other institutions/organizations or on pedagogical projects.
