Praxis

This page is currently under construction. Here is an outdated version of the program's mission.

Praxis is Bryn Mawr's experiential, community-based learning program. Praxis builds on the College's strong tradition of community involvement and civic engagement. Praxis is premised on the principle that social responsibility and "real world" preparedness are achieved through a combination of classroom-based theory with practical experience. The essence of Praxis is the integration of intensive academic study with rigorous, relevant fieldwork.

The Praxis Program sets forth consistent, equitable guidelines for courses that combine classroom study with fieldwork. The structure of the Praxis Program emphasizes the curricular coherence of any experiential or practical study. This emphasis is consistent with Bryn Mawr's academic rigor and curricular standards. A typical Praxis course carries one unit of Bryn Mawr credit (the equivalent of four credit hours at other institutions).

Praxis courses on all levels are distinguished by the integration of practical and theoretical study. The Praxis Program is founded on the principle that fieldwork in isolation is not an academic experience. Rather, it is the successful integration of practice and theory that makes the Praxis experience profoundly academic. Fieldwork functions as a living textbook while a dynamic process of reflection incorporates lessons learned in the field into the classroom setting and applies theoretical understanding gained through classroom study to work done in the broader community.
