A New Chapter

Wyndham
A freshly renovated room at Wyndham Alumnae House.

Wyndham started as a farmhouse in 1796, was expanded in 1893, and again in the 1920s when it was gifted to Bryn Mawr. It has hosted alums, family, potential faculty, even guests of Bryn Mawr Hospital. But it was beginning to show its age.

Following a stint as COVID-19 housing for students in 2020, it was closed for renovations.

Years of water infiltration had caused one side of the building to sink, says Michael Brown, superintendent of the renovation from the architecture firm Gardner/Fox, and that was beginning to degrade the foundation.

Over the past few years, Wyndham has been shored up with concrete and structural steel. The upstairs was brought up to modern fire codes and connected by a new hallway.

“It’s not going anywhere now,” says Nancy Cassano-George, assistant director of Wyndham. There are six rooms upstairs and an accessible room downstairs, all outfitted with new fixtures and linens, that started opening to visitors in the fall. The laundry room was also enlarged to fit two washers and dryers. Cassano-George’s favorite part of the renovation was having the blinds in the Ely Room down for painting, the fan of windows offering uninterrupted views of campus.

"Besides the view, the lighting in here is beautiful," she says. You should see it when it snows."
