Bryn Mawr's Scotch Elm (Ulmus glabra) received the Pennsylvania state champion title in 2007. The Scotch Elm tree is a massive “shade” tree that can grow from 80 to 100 feet. This dark green tree appears light underneath and feels rough to the touch. The Scotch Elm is a native of Western Asia and Central Europe. This tree has been known to live to 500 years old. The Scotch Elm is typically planted in urban areas of Northern America because it flourishes from moist soil and high humidity.
