The Bryn Mawr College Dance Program welcomed Catherine Gallant, a fourth generation Isadora Duncan legacy holder and choreographer, to a virtual workshop on Saturday, Oct. 3, 2020, 2:40-4 p.m., in Pem Dance Studio. The workshop was presented in conjunction with ARTD 225: Dancing Histories/Writing Dance with Lecturer Elizabeth Bergman. Bryn Mawr and Haverford College students attended in person, receiving real-time virtual instruction from Gallant.

This workshop explored the distinct elements of Duncan’s signature movement of breath and weight. Gallant taught two solo dances from Duncan’s sensational and sensual repertoire which were created over a century ago. Discussions of Duncan’s origins and influence placed her within the context of her time and reflected on her historic reputation as an artistic innovator and iconoclast.

Director of Dance Mady Cantor notes, "This workshop gave the students an opportunity to physically inhabit Isadora Duncan's revolutionary movement ideas, led by a practitioner who is a direct artistic descendent of Duncan."
