Additional Course Info | Class Number: 2303 The course is designed to introduce students to the history of African and African Diaspora societies, cultures, and political economies. We will discuss the origins, state formation, external contacts, and the structural transformations and continuities of African societies and cultures in the context of the slave trade, colonial rule, capitalist exploitation, urbanization, and westernization, as well as contemporary struggles over authority, autonomy, identity and access to resources. Case studies will be drawn from across the continent. Approach: Critical Interpretation (CI), Inquiry into the Past (IP); Haverford: B: Analysis of the Social World (B), Social Science (SO) Enrollment Cap: 30; 8 Spaces Reserved for Freshmen. If the course exceeds the enrollment cap the following criteria will be used for the lottery: First-year students; then sophomores; Junior; NO SENIORS |
