This talk explores the American contribution to cultural diversity in Berlin. While the presentation will touch upon the politically determined U.S. military presence in the divided city (1945-1992), the main focus is on the interwar period (1918 to 1939) and the influx of American musicians, actors, and performers of all kinds, including many African Americans, to Berlin's thriving entertainment scene, where they were received with great enthusiasm. Who were they? What drew them to the German capital during the Roaring Twenties? What lasting impact did they have on the city, its culture, and its citizens?
