Join us for a lecture and Q&A discussion with Baktybek Abdrisaev, former ambassador from the Kyrgyz Republic to the U.S. and Canada.

As highlighted by the United Nations 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, climate change poses a distinct threat to mountain communities worldwide. In light of these challenges, Baktybek Abdrisaev will speak about the innovative partnership established between the Kyrgyz Republic and Utah in 1999 to promote sustainable development in mountain communities with a particular focus on gender equity. He will discuss the necessary links between governments, NGOs, families, and communities themselves, as well as the advocacy efforts that have led to transformative results.

Baktybek Abdrisaev, former Kyrgyz Republic ambassador to the U.S. and Canada, teaches history and political science at Utah Valley University. He has advocated for gender equity and sustainable development in collaboration with his students at the United Nations High-Level Political Forum on Sustainable Development, the United Nations Civil Society Conference, and the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women. His political analysis has appeared widely in publications such as The Washington Post, The Wall Street Journal, OpenDemocracy, and CNN. He holds a Ph.D. in physics from the Academy of Sciences of Belarus and is a member of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences.
