Geremias Polanco of Smith College will give a talk titled, "On Numbers...and Patterns...and Games...and Greed."
Abstract:
Sturmian and Beatty sequences are two equivalent uncountable families of sequences with applications in various fields (for instance pure mathematics, music, biology and quasi crystallography). In this talk we will explore these types of sequences, look at some combinatorial games, and present some recent results about these families, stemming from a generalization of a well-known greedy algorithm.
