Bi-Co Mathematics Colloquium with Dr. Jacob Russell

Abstract:
Groups are the fundamental verbs of mathematics. They provide the basic language of action, transformation, computation, and symmetry. These simple objects can wind up really complicated. We will tell the story of the "world problem", a fundamental question in the world of group theory. We will see that this basic question ends up being remarkably complex and that the web of complexity can be navigated with the help of a geometric guide. No knowledge of group theory required, lots of concrete and visual examples will be provided!
