For 16 years, Angela Merkel’s leadership as the first female chancellor of Germany defined German politics. She decided not to seek re-election, marking the first time an incumbent has ever done so in the history of the Federal Republic. The Christian Democrats, the Social Democrats, and, also for the first time, the Greens each nominated a candidate for chancellor. Despite being behind in the polls for months, the Social Democrats with their top candidate, Olaf Scholz, received the most votes in the federal election held on Sept. 26. Historian and political scientist Joachim Wintzer will discuss the 2021 election with an eye to American elections and address the following questions: Which issues were important to German voters and how did this election unfold? How are new coalitions formed? And what might continue or change in a Germany after Merkel?
