Destressing Math Collective with Orli McGuire-Berk and K.c Kula

Dec 13
2023
7:00pm - 8:00pm
On Campus Event - Park Science, Room 245

Orli McGuire-Berk ‘25 and K.c Kula ‘25 will give a talk titled “Approaches to Energy Consumption: A Mathematical Analysis”. Snack will be served starting at 6:30 pm in the Math Lounge.

Abstract: Heat energy is lost through a building’s envelope when there is a difference in temperature between two points. In our research, we demonstrate how different heat generators and materials (especially insulation) impact the rate of heat flow using a model house set in Bryn Mawr, PA. With differential and heat flow equations, we calculate the energy necessary to heat and cool this model house. We then evaluate how energy consumption changes if a geothermal heat pump is installed instead of a typical gas furnace. Our research then proceeds by comparing the monetary and environmental benefits of installing geothermal heat pumps with sustainable insulation. We conclude by evaluating how switching from a gas furnace to a geothermal heat pump saves money, reduces carbon emissions, and decreases energy consumption.
