Distressing Math Collective with Professor Peter Kasius

Abstract: The William Lowell Putnam Mathematical Competition (Putnam Exam) is a highly challenging, prestigious, annual mathematics competition for undergraduate students in the United States and Canada. It is organized by the Mathematical Association of America. What began as a friendly competition between mathematics departments at colleges and universities back in 1938 has become the leading university-level mathematics examination in the world and winning it a prestigious accomplishment. Each December, thousands of math students from hundreds of colleges and universities compete to win top honors. Although participants work independently on the six-hour exam’s problems, there is also a team aspect to the competition. Cash prizes are awarded to the highest-ranked team’s math department and their student members in addition to Putnam Fellows who are the highest-ranking individuals. In this talk, you will learn more about the Putnam Exam and see examples of past Putnam exam problems.
