'Eternal Summer' - A Senior Thesis Performance
A senior thesis performance by Sophie Fridenwald-Fishman (2023) based on The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare.
In The Winter’s Tale by William Shakespeare, Queen Hermione dies at the end of Act 1. At the end of Act 2, which takes place 16 years later, it is revealed that Hermione was alive the whole time living in secret at her handmaid Paulina’s house. We know nothing about what transpired during that decade and a half. This piece, told by pieced-together quotes from Shakespeare’s plays and sonnets, follows Hermione and Paulina through that time. Eternal Summer seeks to give voice to these silenced characters, imagining them in a modern light while still utilizing the Bard’s own voice and poetry.
