Learn about Rabbi Albert Gabbai's experience growing up in Cairo, his multicultural background, and his journey to Philadelphia to become the rabbi of the oldest active synagogue in the U.S.!

Rabbi Albert Gabbai is an esteemed Sephardic rabbi and leader of the Spanish-Portuguese Congregation Mikveh Israel, the oldest active synagogue in the United States. Born in Cairo, Egypt, in 1949, Rabbi Gabbai faced imprisonment after the Six-Day War at the age of 18, enduring three years of hardship. His multicultural background reflects roots in Baghdad, Leghorn, and Salonica. Fluent in more than six languages, Rabbi Gabbai has been the dedicated rabbi of Congregation Mikveh Israel in Philadelphia since 1988.
