LaJuné McMillian

LaJuné McMillian, a New York-based new media artist, maker, and creative technologist, will give a lecture-demonstration on Black Movement in Digital Spaces in which they will discuss and present video examples of their created virtual worlds and futures. They will also show how Deepmotion and Ready Player Me can be used for avatar creation, using audience members to demonstrate Motion Capture/Witnessing technology and the use of this technology in augmented reality.

McMillian’s art and research centers around creating technology and media that are inherently intersectional, allowing communities that have been ignored to have a space to be recognized, accepted, and heard. They focus on integrating performance with augmented and virtual reality, physical computing, and installation art to question what it means for Black movement to be both seen and liberated in digital spaces.

The Digital Media and Collaboration Lab, in Carpenter, Level A, will also host a limited installation of McMillian’s video and VR works during the week of March 27-31. Open hours are Monday, March 27 and Thursday, March 30, 4-6 p.m.; Tuesday, March 28, 5:45-6:30 p.m.; Wednesday, March 29 and Friday, March 31, 12-2 p.m. Other viewing times are available on those days between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. through reservation by emailing lcarusoh@brynmawr.edu with the subject line, McMillian installation.
