A Lecture By Dr. Joachim Wintzer

The 2025 Federal elections in Germany saw dramatic changes to the party coalitions formed in the Bundestag. This election took place in a rapidly shifting geopolitical environment, one marked by an unprecedented level of American involvement. During the pre-election campaign, Elon Musk openly supported the far-right and highly controversial Alternativ für Deutschland (AfD), declaring: “Only the AfD can save Germany.”
American Vice President JD Vance’s critique of the German political establishment and its Brandmauer (firewall) against the AfD has led to much speculation about the future of the German-American transatlantic alliance and the end of liberal world order. Historian and political scientist Joachim Wintzer will analyze the 2025 German elections and discuss the political transformations in Germany that herald a critical Zeitenwende or historical turning point.
