About Professor Sa'ed Atshan
Dr. Atshan (Swarthmore '06), a well-respected professor and academic, earned a master's degree in Public Policy from the Harvard-Kennedy School in 2008, a master's degree in Social Anthropology from Harvard University in 2010, and a Ph.D. in Anthropology and Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University in 2013. From 2013-2015, Atshan was a postdoctoral fellow at Brown University.
From 2015-22, Atshan served as an associate professor of Peace and Conflict Studies at Swarthmore College before being recruited to Emory University where he serves as an associate professor of Anthropology and director of undergraduate studies. In fall 2023, he will return to Swarthmore as the chair of the Peace and Conflict Studies Department.
Atshan's research focuses on contemporary Palestinian society, global LGBTQ movements, and Christians as minorities in the Middle East, and he has written or co-authored three books: Reel Gender: Palestinian and Israeli Cinema, Queer Palestine and the Empire of Critique, and The Moral Triangle: Germans, Israelis, and Palestinians.
