Viva Voce was founded in 2020 and gave their first performance premiering Curt Cacioppo’s Seven Women of Ancient Greek Myth. The subsequent recording, released on Albany Records, received the Ernest Bacon Award for the performance of American music in 2021. Viva Voce is comprised of professional singers from the greater Philadelphia region. Their conductor, Nate Zullinger, is the Director of Choral and Vocal Studies at Haverford and Bryn Mawr Colleges. This concert examines the careers and choral music of two German composers separated by nearly 300 years – Heinrich Schütz and Hugo Distler. Both composers made significant musical contributions in their respective generations, and each faced hardship in the form of devastating wars. Schütz will be represented by his “Deutsches Magnificat” and “Singet dem Herrn,” plus other Biblical settings. Four early music specialists – John Walthausen (organ), Heather Miller Lardin (violone), Kevin Payne (lute), and Nellie Smith (cello) – will join the sixteen singers for these selections. Distler will be represented by two significant motets, “Wachet auf” and “Singet dem Herrn,” plus excerpts from his “Choralmesse.” These latter three works will be performed a cappella.
