Works in Progress Lunch

Dec 5
2023
12:00pm - 1:30pm
On Campus Event - Wyndham, Main Dining Room

Please join us at the "Works in Progress" event featuring Assistant Professor of Political Science Aytuğ Şaşmaz and Fairbank Professor Emeritus in the Humanities and Research Professor Azade Seyhan.

Aytuğ Şaşmaz will be discussing research and data collection involving “Religiosity, Secularism and Pro-Democracy Attitudes in Türkiye: Evidence from Recent Original Surveys.”  The vision of the Republican founders in Turkey was to transition into a secular society, where religion played, at best, a limited role. As we go through the centennial of the Republic, it is a fitting moment to inquire about the extent to which this vision has been actualized. How do Turkish citizens today blend religious values with secularism? And how do these values shape their views on democracy and various forms of governance? He will share initial findings from the first two waves of data collection and delve into plans for the forthcoming third wave. (This is joint work with Tarek Masoud from HKS.)

Azade Seyhan will be discussing her scholarship around “Translating the Enlightenment: The Exodus of German Scholarship to Türkiye (1933-1945).”  This talk will focus on the exile of German-Jewish and anti-Nazi scholars from Hitler’s Germany to the young republic of Türkiye. It situates the translational and philosophical coordinates of this history and examines how Western modernity was imported to a traditionally Islamic society.

The free luncheon event will occur on Tuesday, Dec. 5, 2023 from noon to 1:30 p.m. at Wyndham Alumnae House.
