November 11, 2016

Friday, Nov. 18, 8:30AM-1:00PM, Juvenile Law Center

Join LILAC for this Advocacy & Activism Career Trek! Juvenile Law Center, now in its 41st year, is the oldest non-profit, public interest law firm for children in the country. Juvenile Law Center uses an array of legal strategies and legislative advocacy to promote fairness, prevent harm, ensure access to appropriate services, and create opportunities for success for youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems.

What are Career Treks?

Career Treks are exploratory site visits that bring students to meet face-to-face with organizations. Treks are designed to provide a snapshot into organizations and their mission by visiting them onsite, learning about internship/job opportunities, and gaining a network of contacts in the field. This is limited to 10 students and is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Reserve your spot by submitting your resume through this LanternLink posting. The deadline is Tuesday, November 15 at 11:59pm, though we may fill spots before then.

Logistics

We will depart from Career & Professional Development (CPD) at 8:30 AM and will return to campus at approximately 1:00 PM. SEPTA transportation and lunch will be provided. Registration is through Lantern Link.  Log in and look under Career Treks.  After registering, please check your email for confirmation from LILAC. This visit is limited to 10 students. Please be aware that by signing up you are making a commitment to attend for the duration of the program (8:30AM-1:00PM).

Our host is Catherine Moffa, MSS, MLSP, the Juvenile Law Center’s Youth Advocacy Program Manager. She facilitates the office's youth engagement programs: Youth Fostering Change, Juveniles for Justice, and the Youth Speakers Bureau, and assists with transitional planning reviews, planning for youth who have disabilities and are approaching aging out of the child welfare system.

Cathy graduated with dual master's degrees in Social Service and Law and Social Policy from Bryn Mawr College's Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research in 2013. She received her undergraduate degree in Sociology from Saint Joseph's University.

About the Juvenile Law Center

Juvenile Law Center plays a leadership role nationally and in Pennsylvania in shaping and using the law on behalf of children in the child welfare and justice systems to promote fairness, prevent harm, secure access to appropriate services, and ensure a smooth transition from adolescence to adulthood. Most of the youth on whose behalf it works are between 10 and 21 years of age and are among society’s most vulnerable—most likely to be mislabeled, ignored, harmed, or scarred most likely to be mislabeled, ignored, harmed, or scarred for life by systems that are supposed to help them.

It works to protect and advance children’s rights in courts, legislatures, and executive agencies, utilizing strategies that include litigation, appellate advocacy and submission of amicus (friend-of-the-court) briefs, policy reform, public education, training, and strategic communications. It strives to ensure that laws, policies, and practices affecting youth are rooted in research, consistent with children’s unique developmental characteristics, as well as reflective of international human rights values.
