Adelante Summer Academy Brings Norristown Area Students to Campus

August 4, 2016

Last week, 15 students from grades nine-11 visited Bryn Mawr’s campus as part of the Adelante Summer Academy.

Adelante (“forward” in Spanish) is one of several partnerships between Accíon Comunal Latino Americano de Montgomery County (ACLAMO) and LILAC | Civic Engagement.

Launched in January of 2014, Adelante is a STEM-focused college-bound program that works with students and their parents from the Norristown Area School District. Through this program, students engage in college-prep workshops and STEM-related activities to develop the necessary skills to not only become competitive college applicants but also college graduates.

This is the second year the program has included a Summer Academy, during which the students visit campus for several days to get a taste of what college life is like, disciplines of study within STEM, and how college can transform their futures. Workshops and discussions covered a range of topics but many focused on preparing for a career in STEM and the mathematical knowledge needed for many STEM careers. Professor of Mathematics Leslie Cheng was the faculty member working with the group.

Yeidaly Mejia ’19 is the student coordinator for the program at Bryn Mawr. She was assisted in running the Summer Academy by Ana Cordova ’13, who ran the inaugural Academy.
