The Bryn Mawr College Art Club, located in Arnecliffe studio, offers students opportunities throughout the year to create and socialize.
Community Art Nights, or CANs (formerly known as Creativi-Tea), are held on Thursdays at 7:30 in the studio. These events bring the Bryn Mawr College community together in a relaxed space to make progress on a project chosen and led by an Art Club E-Board member. Past events focused on calligraphy, embroidery, and alcohol ink painting. The next Community Art Night takes place on Thursday, Feb. 1.
Arnecliffe studio is incredibly community focused and is open 24 hours, seven days a week, 365 days a year, to anyone in the Bryn Mawr community with a desire to be creative. Student run, the space is organized and cleaned by students and stocked with materials funded from Bryn Mawr’s Self Government Association. Other student groups, like the literary magazine Nimbus, also use the space.
Anyone can be involved in any aspect of the club’s operations, including Arnecliffe, CANs, and other activities. Regardless of experience, this is a space that promotes art-making, self care, and creativity with the larger goal of building, promoting, and sustaining community.
The Art Club E-board is moving toward making the club and studio accessible, inclusive, and intersectional. Besides the change to CANs, the studio restocking process has been moved to a shared Google form students can fill out so they have autonomy and say in the supplies in the community studio.
Tessa Haas '18, a History of Art major and co-president of Art Club, says she joined Art Club because, “I always have been very interested in the arts, but since beginning college, I didn’t have much time to focus on my own art making practice. … I saw Art Club as an opportunity to begin my practice again in a community-oriented space.”
