The Geological Society of America's Structural Geology and Tectonics (SGT) Division has recognized the research of Professor Arlo Weil, chair of the Department of Geology, with its 2017 "Outstanding Paper Award."

This award is given annually for a published work (paper, book, or map) of exceptional distinction that clearly advances the science of structural geology or tectonics. Weil, and co-author W. Adolph Yonkee of Weber State University, were honored for their paper Tectonic evolution of the Sevier and Laramide belts within the North American Cordillera orogenic system.

Published in 2015, the paper "should become the go-to reference on the evolution of the Sevier and Laramide belts for years to come," said SGT Division Chair James Evans of the University of Utah.

Those with access can read the paper online.
