The following email was sent to faculty, students, and staff on behalf of the Community Day of Learning Planning Committee on Tuesday, November 3.
Dear Campus Community Members:
Thank you to all you participated in the community survey of interest in possible themes for the 2016 Community Day of Learning. The planning committee based this fall’s survey on suggestions we received through the assessment survey of the 2015 Day of Learning. We received 413 responses, and appreciate the time that many of you took to respond.
The committee has now reviewed the responses. While many people would like to continue discussions of race and racism, the issue that generated greatest interest (on measures of both personal interest and importance of community discussion) is socioeconomic diversity and class. The planning committee will thus make socioeconomic diversity and class the core theme of this year’s Community Day of Learning, but will also create opportunities to look at intersections of class with other forms of social experience and identity (including intersections with race and racism).
There was also considerable interest expressed in a day focused on mental health issues. We hope that this will be the focus of a Day of Learning in the future.
The planning committee will now turn its attention to programming ideas and the nuts and bolts of the day. The committee welcomes ideas from all community members and volunteers to offer and/ or organize sessions: please send these to me (rlindebo@brynmawr.edu) and I will be sure to share these with the committee.
