Geology Major Amelia McCarthy of Godfrey, Ill., is among the students embarked on a month-long voyage aboard the research vessel SSV Robert C. Seamans.
The students and researchers from the Sea Education Association are traveling in the Phoenix Islands Protected Area. Located in the Pacific Ocean north of Samoa, the Phoenix Islands Protected Area is made up of eight islands and is one of the the world’s largest UNESCO World Heritage sites. It represents one of Earth’s last intact oceanic coral archipelago ecosystems.
