When the producers of the documentary Love 2020 needed an expert to talk about the legacy of the 2020 U.S. Open, one of the first major sporting events held after the global outbreak of COVID-19, they turned to Bryn Mawr Professor of Sociology David Karen.

"The director called me because she had read some of my writings on the sociology of sport and thought i might be a good commentator on the various aspects of the tournament that she wanted to highlight in the film," says Karen.

Karen's publications on the sociology of sports include Sociological Perspectives on Sport: The Games Outside the Games, written and edited with Professor Emeritus Robert Washington. He is also an avid fan and player of tennis and a native New Yorker.

"It was a delight to talk with Jacqueline Joseph, the director of the film, about so many things that I'm passionate about: tennis, New York City, the role of sports in our lives, and movements for social justice," says Karen.
