Sophie Mongoven ’17 and Elinor De La Torre ’17 Help Stage ‘Curious Revolutionaries: The Peales of Philadelphia’

April 19, 2017 By Cathy Campo '19

Sophie Mongoven ’17 and Elinor De La Torre ’17 played key roles in the staging of the American Philosophical Society’s latest exhibition Curious Revolutionaries: The Peales of Philadelphia.

Through a 2016 summer internship, the pair helped conduct curatorial research for the exhibition, which opened on April 7. They were recognized for their role at the opening reception by curator Diana E. Marsh, who said she could not have done the exhibition without them.

Sophie and Elinor both wrote about their experience on the Summer Internships 2016 blog.

From Elinor’s post:

“The Peale family was close with many of the founding fathers, so it was entertaining to read their anecdotes about George Washington telling puns, or their letters from Thomas Jefferson warning them about pickpockets.”

From Sophie’s post:

“The APS houses many of the Peale family papers in their library, so I gained significant experience working with archives and documents. I learned so much last summer, not just about museums and curatorial work but also about what kind of environment I like. I loved how collaborative the work was, and I was grateful to work in such a fun and supportive office. It’s pretty rare for undergraduates to work up-close on curatorial projects, so this internship was a phenomenal opportunity.”
