The below message was sent to students, faculty, and staff on Oct. 7, 2020
Dear Students, Faculty, and Staff:
As you know, the U.S. national elections are now less than a month away. Active civic engagement is a right and responsibility of all U.S. citizens, and an opportunity to have a voice in our future and the future of our communities.
First and foremost, I encourage you to register to vote if you are eligible and have not already done so, and to make your plan for voting (whether in-person or mail-in). The Career and Civic Engagement Center has assembled terrific registration and voting information, whether you will be voting in the local area or in other areas or states. The Center will offer an Election Day shuttle for undergraduate students to our local polling place between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. on November 3.
My thanks, too, to students in the Graduate School of Social Work who are contributing to the “Voting is Social Work” campaign and their efforts to register voters.
Second, I hope you will seek out opportunities to learn more about candidates and issues at stake in national, state, and local elections from Ballot Ready, debates, media coverage, and campaign statements. One of those opportunities has been organized by two members of the Bryn Mawr faculty—Sharon Ullman in the History Department and Nate Wright in the Sociology Department. Election 2020: Democracy in the Balance, a panel discussion of national experts on elections moderated by Professor Ullman, will take place on Monday, October 19 from 7:00-8:30 p.m.; registration is available on the website.
Finally, I hope you will also encourage your friends and family members to vote in the upcoming election and invest in this fundamental democratic process.
