What does it look like when obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) and an eating disorder overlap? Most people do not think of eating disorders as being part of the OCD spectrum. Even more troubling is the fact that when patients seek help from mental health professionals in order to alleviate their suffering, clinicians may often mistake one for the other.

In this 2-day workshop, we will examine the significant areas of overlap in eating disorders and obsessive-compulsive disorder and how that can greatly affect treatment goals.

Current research on treatment modalities for OCD and eating disorders will be discussed. We will also define both disorders using the DSM-5-TR and highlight the overlapping symptoms. Different treatment strategies and practical ways for supporting individuals struggling with disordered eating will be introduced with opportunity to apply using role play.

This 2-day workshop will include lecture, case vignettes, role play, interactive exercises and discussion.

Objectives

  1. Articulate a broader understanding of the overlap of eating disorder behaviors and obsessive compulsive disorders.
  2. Discuss the complexities in treating OCD co-occurring with eating disorders.
  3. Explain the important elements in a comprehensive treatment plan.

This workshop is appropriate for all level clinicians working with both adult and adolescent populations.
