This full-day workshop will provide participants with action-based group tools that can be utilized in any group setting. Many group participants or students verbalize that groups are boring, repetitive, and unengaging. This workshop will provide training on practical, action-based processes to engage the group-as-a-whole. Participants will learn tools to bring their groups and educational content to life. Emphasis will be placed on the centrality of the mutual aid process in group work and the importance of working with the group-as-a-whole rather than doing individual therapy in a group setting.

The content of this course will be taught experientially, pulling from the fields of social work with groups, experiential therapy, sociometry, psychodrama, experiential education, community organizing, and trauma-informed, strength-based group safety structures.

Participants of this course will learn to 1) utilize multiple experiential group tools; 2) identify the importance of action and experience for personal change and learning; 3) discuss the significance of strengths and safety in trauma work; 4) describe at least one theoretical similarity between social work and sociometry/psychodrama; and 5) understand the centrality of mutual aid in social work with groups

Diversity and cultural competence are especially important when working with trauma and when working experientially. Various adaptations of psychodrama and sociometry will be referenced as it relates to working with diverse populations and psychodrama’s international popularity – especially in academia.

In addition to license CEU’s, participants will also receive training hours towards certification in experiential therapy through the American Society of Experiential Therapists (ExperientialProfessionals.com) and board certification in sociometry, psychodrama, and group psychotherapy through the American Board of Examiners (psychodramacertification.org).

This workshop is appropriate for clinicians working with any type of groups – therapy, educational, supervision, training, and/or community groups.
