One of the more unfortunate truths in research is the delay in applying evidence-based techniques and practices to actual clinical practice. When discussing the nervous system, many clinicians may not have a formal background in neuroscience and thus not understand the neurobiology of mental health conditions to better comprehend the biological mechanisms underlying client behaviors.

This workshop is designed to provide an overview of the human nervous system and to review how negative (and positive) environments can shape brain structure and function. The workshop will focus on clinical interventions that can support wellness and recovery.

Learning Objectives:

At the conclusion of this session participants will be able to:

  1. Summarize the key components of the nervous system involved in the presentation of behavioral health symptomology
  2. Describe the basic negative neural changes which can occur from impoverished environments and how these changes can be minimized and even reversed.
  3. Recommend clinical interventions and strategies based on neurological changes that occur as a result of genetics and/or environmental exposure e.g., traumatic events
  4. List three interventions non-prescribers can implement to help clients taking psychotropic medication

This workshop is designed for beginner-intermediate level clinicians.
