Open to current MSS/MSW or Post-Master's
Bryn Mawr's School Social Worker Certificate program is designed for the student who is interested in pursuing the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) School Social Worker Educational Specialist Certification.
Mission
The mission of the Bryn Mawr College Graduate School of Social Work and Social Research School Social Worker Certificate program is to prepare students to have the necessary knowledge and competence in coordinating and implementing social services for school aged children (K-12), their families, schools, and in the school system communities. Through the School Social Worker Certificate (SSWC) program's graduate courses, professional development workshops, and field-based learning, we prepare students to place their work within theoretical frameworks that support activities of assessment, intervention and evaluation, and stress facility with knowledge, skills and values.
Overview
Bryn Mawr’s School Social Worker Certificate program is approved by the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) and is compliant with current standards, including accommodation and adaptations for students with disabilities and English language learners. The program has been carefully developed to meet all requirements established by PDE for individuals seeking certification as a Pennsylvania School Social Worker, Educational Specialist (CSPG-87).
Our School Social Worker Certificate program prepares you for a specialized area of practice within the broad field of the social work profession in a K-12 setting. In our program you will gain knowledge and skills needed to work within the school system and to serve as part of the student services team. The SSWC program is designed to prepare social work students to support the academic, career and personal-social development needs of diverse, vulnerable, and at-risk PK-12 students and their families.
School Social Workers are trained mental health professionals who can assist with mental health and behavioral concerns, positive behavioral support, and academic and classroom support. They consult with teachers, parents, and administrators and provide individual and group counseling. School Social Workers are instrumental in furthering the mission of a school system which is to provide a setting for teaching, learning, and for the attainment of competence and confidence. School Social Workers actively assist districts in the compliance of Act 71 and enhance the district's ability to meet its academic mission, especially where home, school and community collaboration is the key to achieving student success.
School Social Workers are the link between the home, school and/or community in providing direct as well as indirect services to students, families and school personnel to promote and support students' academic and social success.
After successful completion of the School Social Worker Certificate program and securing PA LSW license, students are positioned to apply for the School Social Worker, Educational Specialist Certification through PDE.
Similar to other professional certifications/licenses, in order to maintain/renew certification, the certified School Social Work professional is required to complete continuing education (PDE Act 48 CE) credits.

PDE Requirements for Certification Application:
- Master's degree in social work from an accredited CSWE program or an equivalent foreign qualification recognized by the CSWE Office of Social Work Accreditation (OSWA).

It is the student's responsibility to apply for official Certification using the PDE Teacher Information Management System (TIMS) once they meet all PDE requirements for application.
After the student completes their PDE School Social Worker, Educational Specialist Certificate PK-12 application, they are to notify the Bryn Mawr College SSWC Certifying Officer who will then finalize the student's application by affirming the student's completion of the SSWC program.
Please note the following:

- PDE (TIMS) system is used to track the School Social Worker Educational Specialist application.
- PA Application Fee: $200
- Fee is set by PDE and current as of 2024.
As with other professional certifications or licenses, the School Social Worker Educational Specialist Certification requires continuing education in order to keep the certification active.
The PA Department of Education requires that persons holding Pennsylvania professional educator certification (including the School Social Worker or Home and School Visitor Educational Specialist Certification) acquire a specific number of approved Act 48 continuing education credit hours in order to maintain/renew their certifications. All credits/hours must be related to an educator’s certificate type or area of assignment, unless enrolled in an administrative program or approved by the school board. (See PA Board regulations for specifics to your certification) (Act 48 FAQ)
Bryn Mawr's Center for Professional Development program offers many Act 48 continuing education credit opportunities appropriate for those seeking to renew their SSW Certification. Each Professional Development contact hour is the equivalent of one Act 48 credit.
