This is a workshop for psychotherapists who have curiosity and appreciation for the depth and complexity that comes with core relational work.

Most of us love what we do; especially when things are going smoothly. There are times, however, when we feel challenged or confused so much that we might even question our choice of profession. At other times we are not sure why people who come to us for help end up leaving before anything of value happens.

In this workshop we will explore what lies beneath enactments such as:

  • missing sessions, coming late
  • ambivalence and how it might manifest itself
  • clients who are not getting better
  • desire to leave the treatment prematurely
  • clients who talk a lot
  • how unmet developmental needs can manifest in sessions
  • defenses against shame
  • when clients are testing the therapist
  • difficult to please clients
  • very likable clients
  • very angry clients

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to 1) learn how to work with ambivalent clients; 2) identify some of the reasons why clients are not getting better and what can help; 3) address the clients desire to leave treatment prematurely; 4) understand why the "difficult" client can actually be smart; 5)  discuss how developmental trauma will impact the treatment; 6) explain why it is necessary to do a thorough assessment before deciding which form of therapy is most appropriate

Marta Ludwig, L.C.S.W., has extensive training in Gestalt and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists. She is also EMDR trained. She currently has a full time private practice in Narberth, PA and is a faculty at the Gestalt Training Institute. During the workshop she will draw from theory, research, her own clinical experience as well as knowledge and wisdom passed onto her from her supervisors and mentors. She continuous to be amazed by the human potential for transformation.
