Lecturer in Theater Mallory Catlett named Co-Artistic Director of Mabou Mines
Guest Lecturer in Theater Mallory Catlett has recently joined renowned experimental theater Mabou Mines as co-artistic director.
Catlett developed the Obie and Bessie Award-winner "This Was the End" while a resident artist at the avant-garde collaborative. The "meditation on memory and decay" (NYT) was later presented at the Chocolate Factory in 2014 before returning to Mabou Mines in 2018. An installation of the piece called "Archive," described as "an artifact and experience," was developed in 2018 at a residency at EMPAC, the Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute and was later presented at LaMama's CultureHub. Catlett is currently directing "The Vicksburg Project," in development at Mabou Mines in collaboration with performer and writer Karen Kandel and composer Eve Beglarian who conceived the song cycle that traces women’s experiences in Vicksburg, Miss. during four different eras in American history. Catlett will also serve as mentor for Mabou Mines' long-running Resident Artist Program for Emerging Artists.
Under Catlett's direction, students in the Theater Program's fall 2020 Performance Ensemble and Advanced Performance Ensemble courses researched and explored several texts by Japanese playwright and director Toshiki Okada from a variety of angles and approaches. The Okada Project led not to one finished production/play but a variety of iterations and actions both live and recorded. Learn more and view the project blog.
