Emperor of the Moon
Theater Program of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges presents Emperor of the Moon
Friday–Sunday, Apr. 3-5 and Friday–Sunday, Apr. 10-12, 2020
Restoration comedy complete with astronomy, astrology, and pseudo-science
Emperor of the Moon, newly adapted from Aphra Behn’s 1687 Folio edition, and directed by Molly Ward, an actress (Playwrights’ Horizons, American Repertory Theater, Edinburgh International Festival) and lecturer in theater for Bryn Mawr College, closes the Bi-Co Theater Program’s 2019-2020 season. Emperor of the Moon is a long-lost gem of Restoration Comedy, drawn from the commedia dell'arte family of characters.
“Miraculous! How this agrees with all I’ve seen and heard tonight!”
With her finger on the pulse of 17th-century contemporary thought, Aphra Behn warns scientists, politicians, and citizens that confirmation bias and a lack of critical thinking can make you look seriously ridiculous. Her Emperor of the Moon, the upcoming Spring semester production by the Theater Program of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges, is a slapstick 17th-century rom com steeped in love letters and pseudo-science. Twelve actors joyously inhabit the dual roles of storytellers and characters in the mischievous players’ world of Behn’s deliciously satirical farce.
Performances are free and open to the public. Opening night is Friday, April 3, and performances will take place at 7:30 p.m., April 3-5 and April 10-12 in the Hepburn Teaching Theater, Goodhart Hall, at Bryn Mawr College.
