Eurydice
Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl
Nov. 11-13 and 17-19, 2017
Production Reimagined a Classic Greek Myth
Directed by Catharine Slusar
The Theater Program of Bryn Mawr and Haverford Colleges (Mark Lord, Chair) presented Sarah Ruhl’s Eurydice, directed by Catharine Slusar, a Barrymore Award-winning actor, director, and Assistant Professor in Theater at Bryn Mawr College. Ruhl, recipient of a MacArthur Fellowship and Steinberg Distinguished Playwright Award, has written over a dozen plays, including The Clean House, Stage Kiss, and In the Next Room, or the vibrator play. Ruhl has been described by Charles Isherwood of The New York Times as "one of the most gifted and adventurous American playwrights to emerge in recent years."
In Eurydice, Ruhl retells a classic Greek myth, shifting focus from Orpheus to his bride, Eurydice, who dies on their wedding night. Ruhl transports us to an underworld where stones talk and sing, where water makes you forget, where mothers are trees, and where the one you love might just come back to you. A play that shifts narrative focus to women feels appropriate for Bryn Mawr College, even more so with Slusar's careful cultivation of an all-female design team: Set and Costume Designer Maiko Matsushima, Lighting Designer Lily Fossner, Lighting Assistant Samantha Wall, Sound Designer Adrienne Mackey, and Assistant Director Franny Mestrich. Eurydice complicates a classic narrative, asking us to think again about the role of women in our stories and in our lives.
Eurydice opens the Theater Program’s 2016-2017 season, with six performances (Nov. 11-13 and 17-19) at the Hepburn Teaching Theater (Goodhart Hall, Bryn Mawr College). Opening night is Friday, Nov. 11.
